About FIRST®

  • What is FIRST?

FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is an international nonprofit organization that focuses on preparing students for the future through team-based robotics programs for ages 4-18. Founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen, the organization guides participants through the process of conducting research, fundraising, designing a solution, building a product, and showcasing the team's achievements. Students' self-confidence and collaborative skills are built up through yearly challenges with varying themes. Even after leaving the program, the skills learned stay with participants for life and have a lasting impact on their character and careers. • This Year's Season

REEFSCAPESM presented by Haas, the 2025 FIRST® Robotics Competition season, was unveiled on January 4, 2025. Part of the overall 2024-2025 FIRST® DIVESM presented by Qualcomm season, REEFSCAPE is themed around one of the most diverse habitats underneath our oceans: coral reefs! In the game, two Alliances of three teams each compete to earn points by placing coral, harvesting algae, and attaching to cages hanging from a barge. Alliances can also earn more rewards by meeting certain criteria and coopering with the opposing Alliance. The Alliance that has earned the most points when time runs out wins the match and advances in ranking. For more information about REEFSCAPE, click here.
